the night stand next to my bed for some regular doses of insomnia.
Ghostly Encounters: True Stories of America's Haunted Inns and Hotels
by Frances Kermen.
If I had the money, the gumption, and the wherewithall I would follow Frances' footsteps. A great vacation and tour guide, it has the advatange of telling you what rooms NOT to stay in.
Read the chapter on the personalities of ghosts, the curious ghost, the mischevious ghost, the comfort ghost, the angry ghost--they're all here. Though fairly comprehensive, be aware it's more of a philosophical exercise than anything else, and can be dry reading at times. Those interested in a ghost-hunting manual should seek elsewhere. However, if you are interested in the philosophical arguments of the nature and existence of ghosts, it is highly recommended.

Amusing and fascinating, this book is excellent reading for anyone interested in the subject. Be warned, there are some first-person accounts of hauntings that are truly frightening.
